Motorola ROKR E2 Black (Unlocked Triband)

The ROKR E2 is shaped in a capsule bar form and our review unit came in a funky black and orange color scheme. Ignoring the orange parts, one would be reminded of the shape of the Motorola E1000. The ROKR E2 is solidly built and there were no noticeable gaps, creaks, or squeaks to be found on the phone. On the front, the keypad is set flushed against the ROKR E2's body, but I am glad to report that the keys are a joy to use and have good tactile feedback. The 5-way navigational d-pad is flanked by the left and right soft keys, dedicated music key, cancel key, and of course the call and end keys. The end key doubles as the power button. The keypad is backlit with a white light, although I found it to be too dim and uneven.

However, it isn't the perfect phone: the tricky keypad, poor battery life, lack of video calling and tendency for the speaker to fail make it a disappointment. The C905 is a slide design phone, unlike the classic-shaped Sony Ericsson C902, and is quite a bit thicker and heavier than the 5 megapixel C902. It's still smaller than its arch-rival, the Nokia N96 though. It's available in a choice of colours: Night Black, Ice Silver (pictured) and Copper Gold. We've got to say that it's a very nice-looking phone, with a distinctive Sony Ericsson style - both square and curved at the same time!

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz pro has landed, bringing a slide-out QWERTY keyboard to the company's HD video-toting handset, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz, which we reviewed earlier in the year. That summary does the Vivaz pro an injustice however: although it shares the same design and similar hardware, the character of the phone is different in several areas. The design sticks to Sony Ericsson's "human design" ethos and like the Vivaz, it has that curved back and slightly narrow profile. The addition of the keyboard means that the Vivaz pro is thicker, but not so thick as to make it unwieldy. The dimensions come out at 109 x 52 x 15mm and it weighs 117g.

LG CU720 SHINE RED (Unlocked)

One of LG's star handsets this year was definitely the LG Shine, which debuted earlier in the year to quite a bit of fanfare. Back then, the only unit available was the LG Shine KE970, made primarily for the European and Asian market. You could get an unlocked version for the U.S., but it would cost you a pretty penny. Also, it didn't have 3G, and its features were rather underwhelming. Fast-forward several months later, and we finally have its American counterpart, the LG Shine CU720 from AT&T. Not only is it quad-band (and not tri-band like the KE970), the Shine CU720 also comes equipped with 3G support thanks to AT&T's HSDPA network, plus access to AT&T's array of broadband services like Cellular Video and Video Share. Aside from that, not much is improved--you still get many of the same features, the same flat keypad, and we didn't like the CU720's navigation joystick. But if you really must have the shiniest slider phone on the block, the LG Shine certainly fits the bill.
